History:

The Professor Corwin W. Johnson Memorial Internships provide high-performing Texas law students with an interest in environmental and natural resources law opportunities to intern eight government agencies located in Texas.  The program honors the late Professor Corwin W. Johnson, who taught at the University of Texas Law School for nearly 60 years and played an important role in the development of water law in Texas, particularly the “law of capture” as applied to water rights.

Johnson was born in Hamlet, Indiana on October 5, 1917. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees and studied at Yale Law School as a Sterling Fellow. During World War II he served as a Special Agent of the F.B.I., engaged in counter-espionage and other law enforcement activities. Professor Johnson joined the faculty of UT Law School as an assistant professor in 1947 and retired in 1988 as the Edward Clark Centennial Professor Emeritus. However, he continued to teach part-time for more than a dozen years.

Professor Johnson was co-author with John E. Cribbet, Roger W. Findley, and Ernest E. Smith of a leading property casebook, Property: Cases and Materials (8th Ed., 2003). He was co-author with John E. Cribbet of a treatise, Principles of The Law of Property (3rd ed. 1989). He died on July 29, 2004 at 86.
